About Smoking Popes

Smoking Popes are a rock band from the northwest suburbs of Chicago, IL. Formed in 1991, Smoking Popes band consists of brothers Josh, Eli, and Matt Caterer, and drummer, Mike Felumlee. The Smoking Popes are most widely know for their song Need You Around which was featured in the movie, Clueless. They achieved their largest commercial success with their 1994 LP, Born to Quit, however, most long-time Smoking Popes fans regard their 1997 LP, Destination Failure as the band’s best work. The band was active from 1991-1998, then disbanded for a few years and reformed again in 2006.

Live from The Rock Room was founded by Smoking Popes’ drummer, Mike Felumlee and all of our sessions take place in Mike’s basement. Originally located at Mike’s house in Westmont, IL, the Rock Room has since moved to Mike’s new place in Milwaukee, WI. The room is still small and there’s still a pole in the middle that presents challenges when shooting the sessions. The pole could not be escaped! Mike was the drummer for Smoking Popes from 1991-1998, then rejoined the band in 2015 and is still currently drumming for the Popes. Mike has also played drums for Alkaline Trio, Tom Daily, This is Me Smiling, and Squirtgun. He has also released several EPs and an LP as a solo artist and sings and plays guitar for the band, The Bigger Empty.

The Smoking Popes performed the very first Live from the Rock Room session and have done a couple of sessions since then. Smoking Popes also headline our annual Live from the Rock Room Fest which takes place every year in Chicago. The first couple of LFTRR Fest lineups have included Bad Cop / Bad Cop, The Mr. T Experience, Red City Radio, Telethon, War on Women, The Sidekicks, Sincere Engineer, Direct Hit!, and more.

Are the Smoking Popes Touring?

Smoking Popes are still a band and have been quite active in recent years. Their latest release was their 2018 LP, Into the Agony which came out on Asian Man Records. They have headlined tours supporting Into the Agony along side Bad Cop / Bad Cop, The Ataris, and Direct Hit. The band currently has a web store on Ryan Young of Off With Their Heads website, Anxious and Angry.
